History of the faculty

For the first time the question of creation of faculty of physical training at the Ulyanovsk state teacher training institution arose in 1967, but due to lack of necessary educational and sports base opening took place only in 1971, when the new building of the university was built. The first 50 students have sat down to study.

The same year at faculty the first department of sports disciplines was organized, in 1976 the department of theoretical bases of physical training was founded, and in 1990 – the department of track and field athletics was opened. In 2012 two more departments – department of physical training and department of a basic medical training and health and safety became parts of faculty.

In 1975 the first release of students of full-time department, and in 1981 the first release of correspondence students took place.

The faculty of physical culture and sport has a track and field athletics arena with the racetrack and two playgrounds, two gyms equipped with modern apparatuses, skiing lodge, specialized training halls for boxing classes and SAMBO, and in the summer of occupation take place in specially equipped sports camp on the bank of Volga.

The candidate of pedagogical sciences, associate professor Kozlov Anatoly Ivanovich have been appointed the first dean of faculty. Further the faculty was headed by: Master of Sports in skiing Veybert Anatoly Robertovich (1973 - 1976), candidates of pedagogical sciences, associate professors Zverev Alexander Petrovich (1976 – 1977 and 1998 – 2007), Vershinin Vladislav Nikolaevich (1978 - 1982), Shaklein Vitaly Aleksandrovich (1982 - 1984), Dr.Sci.Biol., professor Katalymov Leonid Lazarevich (1984 - 1985), candidates of pedagogical sciences, associate professors Zhilkin Alexander Ivanovich (1985 - 1997), Golubev Vladimir Alekseevich (1997 - 1998), Kostyunina Lyubov Ivanovna (2007 - 2009), Kireeva Tamara Petrovna (2009 – 2012).

General information 

Today the faculty is headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Irina Timoshina Nazimovna.

Currently, the faculty has passed to three-level system of training of specialists in the Pedagogical education direction: bachelor degree of 4 and 5 years of training (internally) and 5 years of training (in absentia); magistracy 2 years (internally) and 2,5 years of training (in absentia); postgraduate study 3 years (internally) and 4 years of training (in absentia).

At the moment at faculty two departments (department of the theory and a technique of physical culture and health and safety, department of sports disciplines and physical education) function where more than 300 students of internal and 200 students correspondence offices study.

 Educational process at faculty is provided by skilled research and educational personnel – 4 doctors and 25 candidates of science, honored trainers of Russia, Masters of Sports. Among them 2 teachers are awarded by the medal "For Merits in Sports Science and Education", 2 teachers are awarded by the Medal "For Merits in Development of Physical Culture and Sport", 9 have an honorary title "The excellent student of physical culture and sport of the Russian Federation".

Fr om the first days of creation the doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor, the head of the department of human biology and a basic medical training Lyudmila Dmitriyevna Nazarenko has been working at faculty. In 2003 at department the postgraduate study in the specialty 13.00.04 – the Theory and a technique of physical training, a sports training, improving and adaptive physical culture was opened. Under the leadership of L. D. Nazarenko 2 doctor's and 26 master's theses were prepared and defended.

The faculty develops student's sport which is the central link in education of future teacher of physical culture, defines the prospect of sports and pedagogical activity of group of students and teachers. 31 times from the date of formation of faculty the athletics national team of university won the main prizes of the most mass competitions in the area– relay race for the prizes of the newspaper “Ulyanovskaya Pravda”, setting the absolute record of the track.

Students of faculty of physical culture and sport are engaged in the following groups of vocational physical training, according to the sports specialization:  track and field athletics, skiing, sports orientation, tourism, sports, different types of single combats, sports aerobics, strength sports. Training process takes place in the second half of day, after studies. Skilled teachers and trainers (the world class master of sports and the Master of Sports) pass on the experience and knowledge to students. Classes are given on the best sports bases of the city.

Students of faculty participate in all city and regional competitions, gain victories, or rank among the prize-winners. So students of university in 2016 become winners of competitions in a regional Universiade. The best athletes participate in the All-Russian and International competitions wh ere they also show excellent results.

Special pride of faculty graduates are winners and prize-winners of the Olympic Games, World Cups and Europe, Goodwill Games, the World Universiade, championships of the USSR and Russia, the Spartakiad of the people of the USSR, etc. Olympic champion of Seoul (1988) – Vladimir Krylov, bronze medal winners of the Olympic Games in Atlante (1996) Alexey Lyozin and Zafar Guliyev, world champions: Nikolay Afanasenko, Sergey Naumov, Vladimir Terekhov, Oksana Belova, winners of the world Universiade Alyona Polyan and Yury Shopin, champion of Goodwill Games Natalya Teryokhina, winners and prize-winners of superiority and World Cups, Ivan Pichuzhkin, Timur Belkheev, Anastasia Aslanidi and many others are among them.

 Now more than 100 masters and candidates for the Master of Sports study at faculty.

Since 1993 at faculty the Humanitarian center of rehabilitation of disabled wheelchair invalids was opened. The main aim is  physical and spiritual development of physically disabled people, their active participation in public, sports and cultural life of the Ulyanovsk region. In the center more than 30 disabled people and children of correctional schools of Ulyanovsk are engaged. Unique experience of the Humanitarian center is got by a wide public response and is known in many cities of Russia.

For the forty-year term of work more than 3000 teachers of physical culture and trainers who work in all corners of the country were trained. There are the deserved teachers of the 5th Russia (A. P. Makarov, A. M. Chigin, S. I. Bobrovich, V. V. Panin, R. M. Baskakov), 26 honored trainers of Russia, 5 Honoured Masters of Sports, over 200 world class masters of sports, 5 doctors and 60 candidates of science among them.

Graduates of faculty are our special pride. Most of them work according to the specialty: teachers of physical culture and trainers, teachers of higher education institutions, directors of comprehensive and sports schools, chairmen of sports committees and federations.

Progress of students of faculty of physical culture and sport is considered as a deserved victory of all university, is a good example and an incentive for further sports victories of student's youth of the Ulyanovsk region.
