History of the faculty

Natural and geographic faculty is one of the oldest faculties of the Ulyanovsk state pedagogical university.

September 1, 1934 is the date of birth of the Faculty of Natural Science.

The history of faculty began with office of chemistry, on which in 1932, 27 students were enrolled on the first course. In the subsequent departments of zoology and botany have been approved, the geographical office at biennial teacher's institute has been created, and in September, 1937 the department of geography was created.
Paul Karlovic Lehman has been appointed the first dean of faculty, who has graduated the Leningrad state university and a postgraduate study majoring in "Chemistry".

To the 100 anniversary since the birth of V. I. Lenin (1970) the faculty has moved to the new educational case. The geological and paleontological museum and a winter botanical garden in which unique species of vascular plants fr om different corners of the globe were collected have been created, the zoological museum was replenished with new exhibits, the department of anatomy, physiology and hygiene of the person and animals were created.

Educational and methodical and the material and technical resources developed: in 1953 the agrobiological station was built in a floodplain of the Sviyaga River, in 1965 the biological research station was put on the bank of the Old Main gulf. The geography of educational the practician and forwarding researches has extended, it was captured regions of Central and Lower Volga area, the Cis-Urals, Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

During this period schools of sciences on entomology and geobotany, ornithology and ichthyology, physical, economic and social geography, ethnography and ethnology were formed, which were headed by outstanding scientists-professors A. A. Lyubishchev, R. E. Levina, S. S. Gayniyev, V. V. Blagoveschensky, N.N.Blagoveshchenskaya, R. V. Naumov, K.S.Kalyanov, S. T. Budkov, Yu. A. Volkov, L. P. Shabalina, etc.

In the subsequent scientific researches have been continued in the field of the theory of evolution and a biodiversity, reproductive and population biology, a carpology and vegetative reproduction, physiology and ecology of the person, erosive and sediment processes, analytical and organic chemistry, selection and genetics, and also a technique of teaching educational disciplines (biology, chemistry, geography and ecology).

Since 2007 the dean of faculty is the candidate of geographical sciences, associate professor Vladimir Nikolaevich Fedorov, the scientific secretary of the Ulyanovsk office of the Russian Geographical Society.

Postgraduate studies act on faculty on biological, geographical (Sciences about Earth), to historical and pedagogical sciences: botany; entomology; ichthyology; physiology; microbiology; ecology; pathology, oncology, morphology of animals; economic, social, political and recreational geography; ethnography, ethnology and anthropology, and also general and professional pedagogics.

Educational and methodical work

More than 800 full-time students and  on extramural studies, 50 undergraduates and 21 graduate students annually study at faculty. Geography and ecology, biology and chemistry, human biology and a basic medical training  departments function.

Educational and methodical activity is carried out by highly qualified specialists – 13 professors and doctors of science, 45 associate professors and candidates of science, 12 senior teachers, research associates and assistants.

Specialized lecture audiences and educational offices, computer classes, scientific laboratories and stations, the ethnographic, geological, anatomic and zoological museums, the rich scientific herbarium of plants of a name of the prof. V. V. Blagoveschensky registered in the International IndexHerbariorum database promote implementation of competence-based approach to mastering Federal state educational standards of the higher education.

Curricula provide studying of the following disciplines: Biochemistry and biotechnology, Botany (morphology, systematization and physiology of plants), Biogeography of animals and plants, Biology of reproduction and development, the Geneticist, Geology dynamic and historical, Zoology of invertebrates and vertebrata, Physical geography, Cartography with fundamentals of topography, General and inorganic, analytical and applied chemistry, Physical geography of continents and oceans, Economic and social geography of Russia and foreign countries, etc.

Interactive methods of development of professional skills are ekologo-geographical projects "Small Rivers of the Ulyanovsk Region", master classes, round tables and debates within holding scientific and practical conferences (Day of the Naturalist, Day of science, "Noosphere"), festivals (An Earth Day, Day of the chemist, Week of ecology and geography, "the Frigate "Pallada"), implementation of programs of Children's nuclear academy and Academy of natural-science education, etc.

Field studies

Important link in system of training of modern highly qualified specialists is an educational and work practice on botany and zoology, genetics and ecology, topography and geology, geomorphology and soil science, meteorology and a landshaftovedeniye, chemical technology and study of local lore.

During the passage of field practice, students gain practical skills of a collecting of minerals and rocks, gerbarization of plants, statements of observations of populations of birds and animals, get acquainted with ecologo-floristic and faunistic complexes, fatsias and natural boundaries, develop actions for conservation and rational use of her resources.

Areas of practice include long-distance route foothills of the North Caucasus and the Republic of Karelia, the Urals and Trans-Baikal. During complex scientific expeditions, students come into contact with the diversity of animate and inanimate nature.

RESEARCH WORK

The scientific activity of the faculty covers a number of fundamental areas of research and applied research. It is a study of histology of vertebrate animals (the prof. Antonov E. Research center of fundamental and application-oriented problems of bioecology and biotechnology (hands. Doctor of Biological Science, prof. Antonov E. I.) realizes the activities in the sphere of high technologies – molecular genetics and microbiology, cellular technologies, morphology (histology and cytology), biochemistry and toxicology, ecology and a biodiversity.

The natural and geographical faculty within international cooperation realizes research projects with foreign colleagues from the countries of the foreign and neighboring countries - North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Scientific researches find the reflection in collections of scientific works "Nature of the Simbirsk Volga Region", Lyubishchevsky and Treshnikovsky readings, "SNO ULGP Bulletin", education guidances on geographical, ethnographic and biological study of local lore, magazines "Monomakh", "Geography and Ecology", "Geography at School", "Problems of Regional Ecology", in periodicals, and  are lit on radio and television.

Student life

The natural-geographical faculty is not only a high level of graduates' preparation, , but also a student life full of creativity.

Student life is an opportunity to prove itself in scientific research, sports and recreation, cultural-leisure, civil-patriotic activities.

Students of our faculty take active part in youth forums, festivals ("The Volga region ecological week", "A festival of the Wild peony"), actions ("Day of the Crane", "A green marathon"), realize social projects ("A green corner", "Begin with yourself", "Put and grow up the tree", "The pure city", "Ecopark "The black lake", Walk of Fame).

A long good tradition of faculty is a participation in holding poetic competitions, the dramatized representations (the head Alexander Yasyulis, the BH-13 group), thematic quizes ("The Simbirsk handyman", "Learn the edge"), intellectual games ("What? Wh ere?, When?"), brain rings, a geolecture hall "I live in Russia" (2016) and multigenre reviews (Mr. and Ms. of  ULSPU, "Student's spring" and "Student's fall")

Activists of civil and patriotic sector are organizers of the competition "Live History", "Live and Remember", "Card to the Veteran".

The Students' Scientific Society (SSS) (the curator Candidate of Biology, associate professor A. V. Maslennikov) participates in projects implementation ("The atlas of the nesting birds of Europe", "A floor of basins of the rivers of the Ulyanovsk region"), in carrying out the biolecture hall "Spiders of the Ulyanovsk region", "Insects of the Ulyanovsk region", "The rare and protected plants of the Ulyanovsk region", is engaged in research and development activities in the field of zoologo-botanical study of local lore, ethnography, application-oriented chemistry and rational environmental management, in promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Principal of scientific sector is  Elizabeth Abrosimova (BH-15), the winner of the regional competition "The Most Smart First-year Student".

Within the All-Russian action "Knowledge — Superforce!" with participation of students debates, master classes in writing of scientific projects were organized (hands. Candidate of Biology, associate professor A. V. Mishchenko), and also creative meetings with prominent scientists – scientists ("Club of travelers", "A festival of an author's song").

Students of the faculty can not imagine their life without sports. They are active participants in team competitions in its various forms - volleyball, football, basketball, cross country skiing, swim in the pool, shooting.

Student press center of the Faculty of (.. Hands Ilnar Valiullov, t BS-14) releases press and post-releases for the Pedagogical University site, prepares  photos and videos on student life, leads an official group in the social network "Vkontakte» (https: //vk.com/press_egf_ulspu), has its own account «Instagram» (@egf_ulspu), as well as the channel on «YouTube» (Est Geo).

"Student's life at natural and geographical faculty not just boils, but blows up and thrown up as a huge volcano. Students can not sit still, they are capable of much, and prove it every day! Practical realization of natural science education

Graduates of faculty work in all ecological and nature protection structures, laboratories of chemical and technological control, in the sanitary and hygienic and diagnostic centers, the natural-science museums and travel companies, design and surveying institutions, committees and bodies of natural supervision, environmental assessment, reserves and wildlife areas, national parks and botanical gardens.

Young specialists are demanded in the field of experimental biology and ecology, biotechnology and microbiology, ecological business and management, land management and landscaping, study of local lore and tourism, social ecology and regional economy, geoinformation technologies, are engaged in the sphere of a recreation and subsurface use, and also the solution of problems of protection of cultural and natural heritage of Russia, impart knowledge in the educational organizations and institutions.
