History of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology

In 2012 as a result of structural transformations the pedagogical faculty and a part of faculty of pedagogy, psychology and management were united into one faculty with the name of faculty of Pedagogics and Psychology. Today it is the biggest faculty by the number of students.

The modern faculty follows historical and scientific traditions of the predecessors.

The first set of students to the Department of pre-school education at the historical-philological faculty of the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical Institute took place in 1960. And from 1962 to 2011 training of specialists in the field of pre-school pedagogy and psychology was taking place on the basis of independent faculty of preschool education. Zolotova Elizabeth Ivanovna was the first dean of faculty from 1962 to 1976. Since 1968 at faculty the independent department of pre-school pedagogy has been formed. From 1979 to 1986 Erofeyev Evgeny Sergeyevich, the candidate of pedagogical sciences was the head of faculty. On his initiative the department of primary education was opened in 1984.  Since 1986, the doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor  Pirogov Vitaly Ivanovich, the doctor of pedagogical sciences was the dean of the pedagogical faculty.

The big contribution to formation and development of faculty of preschool education (after renamed into faculty of pedagogy, psychology and management) were brought by such scientists-organizers as Z. A. Bogateeva, N. M. Gnedova, A. A. Antsiferova, N. V. Poltavtseva, M. A. Kavardakova, E. E. Barannikova, A. A. Skvortsov.

In 1988 on the initiative of V. I. Pirogov two offices of preschool and elementary education of faculty were transformed to independent faculties: pedagogical and preschool education. The history of pedagogical faculty is connected with names of such talented scientists and teachers as L. L. Sergeyev, G. M. Denisov, G. A. Kuznetsov, N. V. Nagornov.

Growth of scientific status and material logistics of educational process at pedagogical faculty are connected with Nikolay Vasilyevich Nagornov, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, professor, the dean of pedagogical faculty (1991-2005). Thanks to its efforts scientific relations with the leading pedagogical higher education institutions of the country were established, in 1996 two independent structural divisions – department of pedagogics and psychology of the younger school pupils and department of techniques of primary education were created.

In 2012 department of pedagogy and department of psychology was included in structure of faculty, in 2015 – department of social work.

At the moment training of bachelors, masters and graduate students at faculty is conducted by three departments:

• Preschool and primary general education (head of the department, doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor Zakharova Larisa Mikhaelovna)

• Pedagogy and social work (head of the department,  doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor Shubovich Marina Mikhaelovna)

• Psychology (head of the department,  candidate of psychological sciences, associate professor Silakova Marina Mikhaelovna)

Feature of faculty of pedagogy and psychology is versatility of training for the educational organizations. A wide choice of additional profiles of preparation allows each student to realize as much as possible the personal potential and to seize a big range of competences, that allows graduates to perform professional activity more successful.
Faculty prepares people for work in the public and private institutions which activity is connected with education and culture: professional psychologists, experts in the field of preschool, primary and additional education, socially oriented services. Now preparation is carried out on internal and correspondence forms of education according to 9 educational programs of a bachelor degree and 7 programs of magistracy, programs of a postgraduate study.
Research activities of faculty are oriented to development innovative approaches, to quality of training of the specialists demanded in education. Results of scientific research are systematically approved at interuniversity, international, and also thematic scientific practical conferences.
Staff of faculty regularly participates in exhibitions, thematic seminars and other actions of scientific and applied nature. At faculty the Research laboratory of psychophysiology and psychodiagnostics functions (the head – Candidate of Biology, associate professor Belozerova Lilia Almazovna), the contractual and grant group including representatives of all departments is created. Scientific platforms of faculty and university form are also bases of practice of students and research work of undergraduates.

Faculty of pedagogy and psychology in 2012 was headed by the doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor Aryabkina Irina Valentinovna, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, associate professor Yumakulov Nail Hasyanovich.

In 2014 Solomenko Lyudmila Dmitriyevna, the Honored teacher of the Russian Federation, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, the associate professor became the dean of faculty. Lyudmila Dmitriyevna has graduated from the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University. Subsequently she has defended the master's thesis which research supervisor was N. V. Nagornov.
